As a result of the US sanctions against Russia, the Russian military is apparently forced to use computer chips from old kitchen appliances for their tanks. The Washington Post reported this, referring to a statement by US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.

According to the US Department of Commerce, US technical exports to Russia have fallen by 70 percent since the beginning of the war of aggression against Ukraine ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The value of total exports from the United States fell by 97 percent.

In her speech, Raimondo also reported on two Russian tank production companies that had to shut down completely for the time being due to a lack of material.

Russia itself produces hardly any computer chips, which, however, are essential for military technology. The majority of the material has always been sourced from western, but also from Asian manufacturers.

The USA recently issued further sanctions, which also restrict the export of third countries to Russia, the export of which is carried out by a so-called “US person” or contains material from US production. This is true of most computer chips made around the world.
