Former French professional soccer player Lilian Thuram has called on athletes to take more responsibility when it comes to social issues. “Sport should play an even more important role in society,” said the 1998 world champion on Wednesday in the Red Salon of the Volksbühne on Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin on the occasion of the presentation of his book “White Thinking”.

The athlete can form an emotional relationship with the audience on the pitch. “From then on, athletes can contribute very important things,” said the 50-year-old, who has been fighting racism for decades.

The former professional of AS Monaco, Parma and Juventus Turin therefore actively addresses footballers and other athletes to get involved politically. “Bring debates into society, make yourself aware that you have a role model function,” said Thuram, who regrets that not enough is being done to bring athletes into social responsibility: “We haven’t done that enough so far. Neither do the politicians. I think they know how much power athletes could have.”
