Phillipe Coutinho hasn’t had it easy in his career – the Brazilian is always plagued by fluctuations in form. The Brazilian joined Aston Villa on loan from FC Barcelona in January and things have been looking up ever since. Now Aston Villa are said to be on the verge of signing Coutinho on a permanent basis.

Great price: Phillipe Coutinho joined Aston Villa on loan from FC Barcelona in January with a €30m purchase option. Now the 29-year-old is on the brink of signing a permanent deal with Aston Villa – and for just a fraction of the price. Because, as the transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports, Aston Villa has traded the Catalans down to a fee of 20 million euros.

Official soon: Romano said on Twitter: “The official statement on Philippe Coutinho’s permanent move to Aston Villa is expected soon. The agreement was reached yesterday, some of the papers have already been signed. Barcelona will receive around 20 million euros.”

Shapeshifting again? The question is whether Coutinho can gain a better foothold at Aston Villa than at other clubs. The Brazilian got off to an impressive start, scoring four goals and three assists in his first eight games, but has been faltering of late. The playmaker hasn’t had a goal contribution since March 10.
