After two fires in Kastorf (Mecklenburg Lake District) and Güstrow, the police are investigating both cases on suspicion of arson. As a police spokesman said on Wednesday, the fire in Kastorf broke out on Tuesday evening in a large barn in which around 20 cars were stored.

About 50 firefighters were on duty and were able to prevent most of the cars in the vehicle warehouse from catching fire. The damage to the burnt out and damaged cars was still estimated at five figures. However, the barn was largely saved. Residents noticed and reported heavy smoke. Deliberate arson is suspected here.

In Güstrow, heavy smoke caused road closures and resident warnings at the train station on Tuesday. A large barracks had gone up in flames there. According to the police, a bush is said to have burned in the course of the drought. The flames would then have spread to the large empty barracks. For safety reasons, the fire brigade had the building “burn down in a controlled manner.” No one was injured in either fire.
