(Rome) Stan Wawrinka, 361st in the world, chained a second victory, Wednesday at the Masters 1000 in Rome where he fought for almost three hours to dismiss the Serb Laslo Djere (59th) 7-6 (10/8), 3-6 , 6-4.
In the round of 16, the Swiss will face the world No.1 Novak Djokovic.
At 37, Wawrinka is playing his third tournament on Roman soil in more than a year, but both in Marbella (in the Challenger) and in Monte Carlo, he was eliminated in the first round.
This time, the ex-N. 3 in the world who had beaten the American Reilly Opelka (17th in the world) 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the 1st round, managed to climb to 8th. He had not chained two victories in a tournament since his defeat in the quarter-finals at the ATP 250 in Melbourne in February 2021.
Triple Grand Slam winner (Australian Open 2014, Roland-Garros 2015, US Open 2016), Wawrinka ended his 2021 season in March after an elimination in the first round in Doha. He treated during these long months an injury to the left foot that he had been dragging since 2019.
