Just over a month before the legislative elections, it is Jean-Luc Mélenchon who would best embody the opposition to Emmanuel Macron ahead of Marine Le Pen, according to the latest Elabe opinion poll for L’Express and BFMTV, in partnership with SFR unveiled this Wednesday, May 4. With his 22% in the first round of the presidential election, the leader of rebellious France is placed just ahead of the frontist Marine Le Pen (37% against 33%), and is well ahead of Eric Zemmour (6%) and the leaders of the party Les Republicans (3%). 21% of those questioned believe that none of them best embodies the opposition to the Head of State.

If unsurprisingly left and far right sympathizers favor their leader at 77%, LREM sympathizers and allies (MoDem, Horizons and Agir) believe that it is Jean-Luc Mélenchon and the union of the left (52%) who best embodies the opposition ahead of Marine Le Pen (18%).

Respondents, however, remain hesitant about the outcome of the legislative elections. 39% declare that they do not know who will emerge victorious and will have the most deputies in the National Assembly next June. But hopes are allowed on the left since once again it is the alliance of the left (France Insoumise, Europe Ecologie Les Verts, Socialist Party, Communist Party) which is at the top of the forecasts with 23% of the votes. The hypothetical alliance of La République en Marche, MoDem, Horizons and Agir is just behind (21%) followed by the National Rally (14%).

Widely acclaimed by sympathizers on the left (84%), the alliance of the left could very quickly become a reality since after the Greens and the PC it is the turn of the PS to have reached an agreement in principle with LFI. According to the survey, 64% of its sympathizers believe that the ideas and programs defended by left-wing and environmentalist parties have more points in common than differences.

The union of the left is however not really to the taste of the other political camps who perceive a possible threat to the legislative elections. 58% of LREM/allied sympathizers are against it against 71% of RN/R! sympathizers. In recent days, elected officials and executives of the presidential majority have not hidden their annoyance at the popularity of the left. And if this “historic” union will certainly ensure a more provided opposition, the Mélenchon hypothesis in Matignon for the moment almost makes the macronists smile.
