The Fifth Chamber of the Provincial Court of Murcia has issued a provisional sentence sentencing a priest from the Diocese of Cartagena to 7 years and 9 months in prison and the payment of 30,000 euros for sexual abuse committed against a minor, as confirmed by the Bishopric of Cartagena.

While awaiting a final sentence, the Bishopric has wanted to show its “total rejection, once again” and its “strong rejection” of the crimes that the judicial resolution “attributes to this priest against the victim, with the aggravating circumstance that it was a minor.”

Likewise, it expresses its “closeness to the victim and her family”, to whom “we continue to offer our help through the Episcopal Delegation for the protection of minors and vulnerable adults”.

In addition, as established in the regulations of the Church, the priest “continues to be suspended from the exercise of the priestly ministry, as long as the canonical criminal process that is underway is not completed,” added the Bishopric.
