According to an MDR survey, the price increases are already having a major impact on people in central Germany. Three quarters of the approximately 29,000 respondents in Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia stated that the increased prices were a heavy burden on them. Only 23 percent stated that the additional financial burden was only slightly noticeable. The majority of respondents said that they are currently primarily saving electricity, comparing prices more, reducing everyday purchases or buying cheaper products. In addition, more than a third have changed their holiday plans due to the price increases, reduced leisure activities and left the car at home more often.

According to the Federal Statistical Office, prices for consumers in Germany rose by 7.4 percent in April compared to the same month last year.

Most respondents were skeptical about the federal government’s announced relief package: 83 percent do not think that the energy flat-rate, child bonus and 9-euro ticket will actually relieve them noticeably. 58 percent of those surveyed stated that they did not want to buy the discounted public transport ticket. Just 21 percent stated that they wanted to use the 9-euro ticket. Nine percent already use a season ticket for local public transport. Around two-thirds would have preferred the funds released for this to be invested in the expansion of public transport.
